Freedom to Read: Senator Rachel May and Tony Simone Rally to Protect Access to Books

Rachel May

Senator Rachel May and Assemblymember Tony Simone, sponsors of the Freedom to Read Act (S1099), brought together distinguished authors, advocates, and legislative colleagues to rally for New Yorkers’ freedom to read. The bill would ensure school libraries provide students with access to a wide range of age-appropriate materials and protect the freedom to explore diverse perspectives.

"New York’s diversity and commitment to free expression mean students deserve access to a broad range of age-appropriate materials that foster learning and critical thinking. The Freedom to Read ensures young people can explore diverse perspectives, grow as learners, and become more engaged members of society. Thank you to my Assembly colleagues and the incredible authors who joined us today in support of these important bills," said Senator Rachel May.
