Griffo, Task Force Members Release Report and Legislative Recommendations Regarding Heroin & Opioid Addiction

ALBANY – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today joined his colleagues on the Senate Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction to release a report that summarizes findings from statewide forums on drug addiction, treatment and crime. The report includes 25 bills that the Senate is expected to address before it recesses for the summer.

SENATOR MARTINS TO SPONSOR FREE LEGAL SERVICES PROGRAM IN WESTBURY

     Senator Jack Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that he will be sponsoring a program in Westbury to provide free legal services to those in need.

     Senator Martins has arranged to bring the Mobile Legal Help Center to the Westbury Library, located at 445 Jefferson Street in Westbury, on Wednesday, May 14th from 10 am to 3 pm. The Mobile Legal Help Center, which is a partnership between the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) and the New York State Office of Court Administration, brings free, civil legal services directly into communities.

     NYLAG staff will be available to provide free legal assistance to local residents on issues related to:

     • Domestic violence

Senator Mark Grisanti (R, I-60) will sponsor a New York State Senate Roundtable,”Domestic Violence: Prevention Starts With You” on Friday, April 4th from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m., at the Walter J. Mahoney Building, 65 Court Street in Buffalo, Senate Hearing Room 6.

Senator Grisanti Sponsors and Passes Amanda Lynn's Law in New York State Senate

Senator Mark Grisanti (R,I-60) today announced that Senate Bill S.1590, which makes it a crime to conceal a death by knowingly moving or otherwise hiding a human corpse so that discovery of the death will be hindered, has been passed following a vote by the New York State Senate.

 

The bill, which was sponsored by Senator Grisanti, was previously passed in the state Senate the past two years but has yet to be approved by the state Assembly.

Griffo Opposes Free College Education for Inmates

UTICA – Sen. Joseph A. Griffo today reiterated his opposition to state prisoners receiving “extreme amenities,” which includes Gov. Cuomo’s proposal to use state funds to educate prisoners at no cost to the recipient.

“Prison is supposed to be a punishment for wrongdoing, not a Club Med where your family can visit anytime and your health issues and education are taken care of at zero cost,” said Griffo, R-Rome. “I have opposed measures that provide perks to prisoners – some of which ordinary New Yorkers don’t even receive – and will continue to do so in the future.”

"Protecting citizens, especially our most vulnerable, is a basic requirement of government at every level. After having spoken with town supervisors and local law enforcement extensively, I share their concerns that placing level 2 and 3 sex offenders in state operated residential group homes jeopardizes the quality of life for West Seneca, Scottsville and other western New York residents, and the safety of area children, while violating the spirit of New York’s sex offender notification laws, if not their letter."
