Astoria Civic Holds Annual Scholarship Dinner Fundraiser

The Queens Gazette wrote an article covering the Astoria Civic Association's annual gala dinner for the Judge Charles J. Vallone Scholarship. Many distinguished guests were in attendance, including Senator Gianaris.

The Astoria Civic Association (ACA) held its annual gala dinner to raise funds for the Judge Charles J. Vallone Scholarship. The association honored philanthropists John and Margo Catsimatidis, CEO of Red Apple Group and president of MCV Advertising respectively. Also honored was Astoria resident and business leader Santino DiFiore. More than 300 guests were in attendance including state Senator Michael Gianaris, Assemblymember Aravella Simotas and Councilmember Peter Vallone Jr. at Riccardo’s By the Bridge Catering Hall in Astoria.

Community Fights To Save Bryant H.S.

An article written by The Queens Gazette reports on the rally held by Assemblymember Aravella Simotas opposing the City Department of Education's proposal to drastically alter Bryant High School. Senator Gianaris attended the rally and believes that the proposed changes will bring more harm than good.

Assemblymember Aravella Simotas held a rally at William Cullen Bryant H.S. on April 3, in opposition to the city Department of Education’s proposal to dramatically overhaul the structure of the Western Queens institution.

 

Simotas, a Bryant alumna, was joined by elected officials, community leaders as well as Bryant students, teachers and parents in calling on the city to reconsider Bryant’s designation for the Turnaround model.

Bright Future For Historic Herkimer Home

HERKIMER, 04/04/12 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) and Assemblyman Marc Butler (R/C/I-Newport) today announced continued state funding that will keep General Herkimer Home open and provide for future needs at the historic site.

“When Herkimer Home was threatened last year I vowed to do everything in my power to protect this vital piece of local history,” said Senator Seward. “In 2011, I was able to secure $100,000 in state funding to provide for the immediate needs at Herkimer Home and begin future planning. I am pleased to announce that another $100,000 allocation is included in the 2012-2013 budget securing the future of Herkimer Home.”

Senator Robach Announces New York State Scholarship Program

Senator Joe Robach announced today that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $1,500 scholarships to be awarded June 4th  at their Annual Legislative Conference Day.  Scholarship winners must be present to receive their awards.

 

“These scholarships will hopefully alleviate some of the burden of affording a higher education,” says Senator Robach.

Talented Artists From West Islip Elementary Schools Chosen To Display Artwork At State Capitol Exhibit

Johnson met with three talented young artists from West Islip Elementary Schools at the State Capitol on March 14, 2012.  Brianna Compitello from Bayview Elementary School, and Sydney Krawchuk and Tyler Foran, both from Westbrook Elementary School were chosen to display their artwork at the 22nd Annual State-wide New York State Art Teachers Association 2012 Legislative Student Art Exhibit:  A Celebration of Young Artists.“It was a pleasure to meet with such talented young artists from West Islip, and I congratulate them for being invited to show their wonderful artwork in this celebratory exhibit,” Senator Johnson said.

State Passes Fiscally Responsible Budget That Respects Taxpayers

Budget Comes Early, Controls Spending and Holds The Line On Taxes

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan hailed the 2012 state budget today as lawmakers approved the spending plan ahead of the April 1st deadline, marking the second consecutive year New York State will enact an on-time budget.

“Passing a second on-time budget in as many years is indicative of the larger progress we’ve seen lately in Albany. Just as late budgets were once a symbol of dysfunction, on-time budgets are symbolic of continued progress,” the Senator said. “Even more important than passing an on-time budget, is that we passed a fiscally responsible budget that respects New York’s taxpayers and keeps the State moving forward.”

Granville Jazz Ensemble Grooves in Albany

Senator Martins Presents 'How a Bill Becomes a Law' at St. Mary's School

Senator Jack M. Martins has been visiting schools throughout the Seventh Senate District to present “How a Bill Becomes a Law,” a program his office started to engage elementary schools in the process of state government. Most recently, he visited the St. Mary's School in Manhasset to speak to fifth grade students about how a bill becomes a law.

Senator Martins told the students that it all starts with an idea and then involves building consensus through the legislature, which includes the New York State Senate and New York State Assembly. If the bill passes both houses, it is sent to the Governor, who can sign the bill into law or veto it.

Budget Update From State Senator David J. Valesky

The New York State Legislature has completed passage of an on-time budget for the second year in a row. Though it was another challenging budget, requiring the closure of a $3.5 billion deficit, we were able to balance the budget without tax increases or fiscal gimmickry. In addition, overall spending was reduced for the second straight year, the frist time this has happened in at least three decades.
