Westchester Herald: Senator Stewart-Cousins Informs Grandparent Caregivers About Financial Assistance Program

Westchester Herald (March 15, 2010)

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, in partnership with the Kinship Caregiver Program, is working to inform residents about financial assistance available to grandparents and other relatives raising children. The individuals currently enrolled in the program receive an average of $400 per month to care for a child and $150 for any additional children. However, due to limited awareness about this program, it is estimated that only 10% of New Yorkers who qualify for assistance apply to the program…

Sen. Foley is Joined by Community Leaders in an Effort to Increase Participation in 2010 Census

Civic leaders and activists from local communities in Suffolk County joined Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) as he called for increased participation in the U.S Census. The 2010 Census awareness event, which took place at the Brentwood Public Library, was centered around relaying the importance of Census participation and giving community members the tools necessary to educate their friends, family, and neighbors about the Census.

Senate Majority Committed To Saving Our Parks

Senate Democrats Preserve Recreational Facilities and Bolster Small Businesses

Today, the Senate Majority and advocates stood together in support of State Parks.

On Monday, the Majority Conference unanimously voted for a budget resolution which restored all $11.5 million of the Governor’s budget cuts to parks operations. If enacted, the cut would have resulted in the closure of 57 State Parks and reduced operations at an additional 22 State Parks.

Senator Montgomery Vows to Fight Child Care Cuts! (3-17-10)

On Friday, March 12, 2010 in Brooklyn’s Boro Hall, Senator Velmanette Montgomery  met with child care advocates, parents, educators, and elected officials to  develop a response to Mayor Bloomberg’s proposal to slash funding for child care and head start programs.     

The proposed cuts fall disproportionately on Brooklyn.

Senator Savino Introduces Bill To Protect Workers from Wage Theft

New York State Senator Diane Savino, New York State Assembly Member Carl Heastie, and the Coalition to Prevent Wage Theft & Protect Responsible Businesses stood in front of the SOHO location of Scoop NYC, a business that illegally withheld half a million dollars in overtime pay from workers to announce the introduction of comprehensive state legislation to reform the New York State Labor Law (S.7050/A.10163). The coalition is comprised of low-income workers, not-for-profit organizations, civic legal organizations, organized labor, and small businesses.

Sen. Foley, Small Businesses Rally to Protect Jobs, Oppose Wine Sale in Grocery Stores

On Saturday, March 6, 2010, State Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) was joined by small business owners and activists in rallying against the governor’s proposal to sell wine in grocery stores. The measure, which is proposed as part of the governor’s budget, will costs thousands of jobs at small wine and liquor stores across the state and increase access to alcohol for underage drinkers.

Sen. Foley Acts to Protect Domestic Violence Victims and Preserve their Right to Vote

The New York State Senate passed an important bill sponsored by Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) that allows victims of domestic violence to have their addresses sealed. Sen. Foley’s bill (S. 5945) addresses a flaw in the election law that mandates boards of elections to disclose a voter’s address to anyone requesting that information.
