Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins Works To Cut Government Waste and Inefficiency

(35th District, NYS) Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins, as a member of the Senate Task Force on Government Efficiency, continues to work with her colleagues to examine spending practices in State agencies. Established in March, the Senate Task Force on Government Efficiency was formed to uncover inefficient government spending and develop productive solutions to put taxpayer dollars to better use.

STATE OFFICIALS AGREE TO CHANGE NAME OF LEATHERSTOCKING REGION

(Utica) - Senator Joseph A. Griffo (R/IP/C - Rome) and Assemblywoman RoAnn M. Destito (D-Rome) announced that New York State, for tourism purposes, will be officially retiring the designation “Central Leatherstocking Region” and renaming the seven county area as “Central New York”.

The formerly known “Central Leatherstocking Region” encompasses the seven upstate counties of Broome, Chenango, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego and Schoharie.

Sen. Foley is Joined by Community Leaders in an Effort to Increase Participation in 2010 Census

Civic leaders and activists from local communities in Suffolk County joined Senator Brian X. Foley (D – Blue Point) as he called for increased participation in the U.S Census. The 2010 Census awareness event, which took place at the Brentwood Public Library, was centered around relaying the importance of Census participation and giving community members the tools necessary to educate their friends, family, and neighbors about the Census.

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins' Office Designated "Be Counted Site" For 2010 Census

Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins is urging every New Yorker to "stand up and be counted!"

"The Census Day on April 1st is right around the corner," said Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins. "The information collected by the Census is used to determine state and federal funding that communities will receive to improve schools, hospitals, emergency services, senior centers and other areas that are vital our neighborhoods. Therefore, it is important each person fill out the Census forms as well as encourage friends, family and others they know to do the same.”

Griffo Condemns Senate Holiday Break as a "Charade"

Senator Griffo voted against emergency spending that would allow the Senate to take a weeklong recess despite the looming budget deadline.  On the floor of the Senate, Griffo explained his 'no' vote:  "I just think it’s unacceptable.  We should continue to work and strive for this community objective and the responsibility that has been entrusted to us.  For that reason, I vote no."

Senate Majority Passes "Sunshine" Legislation To Hold Government Accountable

“Sunshine” Package Passes, Further Opens Legislative Process to Public

The New York State Democratic Majority took another step forward today in lifting the veil on state government records by passing a package of four Sunshine Policy bills which reform the Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) and state Open Meetings Law. The package is designed to provide the public with greater access to information about State government as well as easier access to programs, processes and overall governmental activity.
