SENATOR FUSCHILLO MEETS WITH NEW STATE HEALTH COMMISSIONER

          Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) recently met with the new Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, Dr. Nirav Shah. Dr. Shah was nominated by Governor Cuomo to lead the State Department of Health and was recently confirmed as Commissioner by the State Senate. Senator Fuschillo supported Dr. Shah’s nomination in the Senate, where it received unanimous approval.

NY Senate confirms Shah as Department of Health Head; Ranzenhofer congratulates former Williamsville resident

State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer congratulates Dr. Nirav R. Shah after being unanimously confirmed by the New York State Senate on Monday, January 24 as Commissioner of the Department of Health.  Dr. Shah was valedictorian of the Williamsville East High School Class of 1990.  Governor Andrew Cuomo nominated Dr. Shah for the post on January 3.

Maplewood YMCA Unveils Expansion, Renovations

On Monday, January 17th, the Maplewood YMCA held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of renovations which totaled $5 million dollars, which added 16,000 square feet of space. Seward Joins Medicaid Reform Roundtable

ALBANY, 01/18/10 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today joined with other members of the Senate Health Committee and health care experts during a public roundtable to discuss the most effective and efficient methods to reform New York State’s Medicaid program.

“Today’s discussion served as a solid starting point that will help move us toward useful improvements of the state’s Medicaid system,” said Senator Seward.  “New York spends over $1 billion each week on Medicaid.  Clearly, changes must be made.”

Serving on Governor Cuomo’s Medicaid Redesign Task Force

On January 5, 2011, Governor Cuomo issued an executive order creating the Medicaid Redesign Team.  New York’s Medicaid program provides health insurance coverage to almost one in four New Yorkers, and costs over $52 billion per year.  The Medicaid Redesign Team is charged with conducting a comprehensive review of the State’s Medicaid program; making recommendations to the Governor by March 1, 2011 on potential Medicaid spending reductions in the State’s Fiscal Year 2011-12 budget; and issuing a final report at the end of Fiscal Year 2011-2012 on additional short-term reforms and systemic changes to improve quality of care at lower cost.
