Many New Yorkers are shocked to learn that Albany has long blocked adding gender identity and expression to the list of characteristics — including age, national origin, and religion — for which people may not be evicted, fired or refused service in the state Human Rights Law. Even more shocking? Last month, every single Republican in the Senate's Investigations and Government Operations Committee voted against my bill to fix this. "
