BILL NUMBER:A9106 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the state law, in relation to establish- ing a state song PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This bill would establish "Low Bridge," also known as "The Erie Canal Song" as the official song of the State of New York. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section one amends the state law by adding a new section 89, making "Low Bridge" by Thomas S. Allen the official state song, and providing the lyrics to such song. Section two is the effective date. JUSTIFICATION: The creation and evolution of the Erie Canal has left a rich cultural imprint on New York as a whole. Completed in 1832, the Erie Canal created a water route from Buffalo to Albany, allowing trade to move from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mid-West without needing to cross land - the first route of its kind in America. The creation of the Erie Canal helped establish New York City as the commerce hub that is it now, surpassing Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New Orleans. It connected Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, spurring economic growth and helping them to become upstate New York's largest and most bustling cities.
