AN ACT directing the president of  the  State  University  of  New  York
  Upstate Medical University to conduct a study to explore the viability
  and compelling need for branch campuses of the State University of New
  York  Upstate Medical University in the Fort Drum/Watertown and Mohawk
  Valley Regions of New York State

  THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND  ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section  1.  The president of the State University of New York Upstate
Medical University shall conduct a study to examine, evaluate  and  make
recommendations  concerning the viability and compelling need for estab-
lishment of branch campuses of the Upstate  Medical  University  in  the
Fort  Drum/Watertown  region  and the Mohawk Valley region of the state,
including the greater Utica and Rome areas. The purposes of such  branch
campuses  would  be  to  institute  cooperation  between Upstate Medical
University and the health care, higher education, and  business  leader-
ship  of  those  regions  to complement their services and establish new
programs designed to meet the health care education  and  training,  and
the health care needs of such surrounding communities.
  S  2.  The  president  of the State University of the New York Upstate
Medical University shall report the findings of such study to the gover-
nor, the legislature, and the board of trustees of the State  University
of New York, on or before January 1, 2010.
  S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
