BILL NUMBER: S6958 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the education law, in relation to the educational requirements for special assistants and physicians assistants PURPOSE OF BILL : To update law to reflect the current educational requirements for physician's assistants. SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section 1. Paragraphs (c), (d) and (e) of subdivision 1 of section 6541 of the education law, as amended by chapter 170 of the laws of 1992 are amended. JUSTIFICATION : Physician assistants are educated in intensive medical programs accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). There are 22 accredited physician assistant ("PA") programs in New York State - all of which are bachelors degree programs, masters degree programs, or dual bachelors/masters degree programs. Because of the close working relationship PAs have with physicians, PAs are educated in a medical model designed to complement physician

STAVISKY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Higher Education AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to the educational requirements for special assistants and physicians assistants THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Paragraphs (c), (d) and (e) of subdivision 1 of section 6541 of the education law, as amended by chapter 179 of the laws of 1992, are amended to read as follows: (c) IN THE CASE OF AN APPLICANT FOR REGISTRATION AS A SPECIAL ASSIST- ANT, has successfully completed a four-year course of study in a second- ary school approved by the board of regents or has passed an equivalency test; (d) IN THE CASE OF AN APPLICANT FOR REGISTRATION AS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, POSSESSES A BACHELOR'S DEGREE FROM AN ACCREDITED COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY; (E) has satisfactorily completed an approved program for the training of physician assistants or specialist assistants. The approved program for the training of physician assistants shall include not less than forty weeks of supervised clinical training and thirty-two credit hours of classroom work. The commissioner is empowered to determine whether an applicant possesses equivalent education and training, such as experi- ence as a nurse or military corpsman, which may be accepted in lieu of all or part of an approved program; and [(e)] (F) in the case of an applicant for registration as a physician assistant, has obtained a passing score on an examination acceptable to the department. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately and shall apply to new applications for registration as a physician assistant occurring on and after such date.
