BILL NUMBER: S1721 TITLE OF BILL : An act to direct the division of military and naval affairs to provide for the establishment of the Plattsburgh Bay New York state veterans' cemetery and to direct the division of veterans' affairs to operate and maintain such cemetery PURPOSE : To provide for the establishment of a New York State veterans' cemetery in northern New York. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS : Section 1 - directs the Division of Veterans' Affairs to establish, operate and maintain a veteran's cemetery in the Plattsburgh area. Section 2 - contains the effective date. JUSTIFICATION : There are 28,000 veterans that reside in northern New York, an area that includes Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties. At present, the closest veterans' cemetery is the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery which is more than two hours away from Plattsburgh. With the increasing age of our veterans, a veterans' cemetery is needed for northern New York. Families of veterans deserve a cemetery

DUPREY -- read once and referred to the Committee on Veterans' Affairs AN ACT to direct the division of military and naval affairs to provide for the establishment of the Plattsburgh Bay New York state veterans' cemetery and to direct the division of veterans' affairs to operate and maintain such cemetery THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The division of military and naval affairs is hereby directed to provide for the establishment of a veterans' cemetery. Such veterans' cemetery shall be known as the "Plattsburgh Bay New York state veterans' cemetery" and shall be located in the Plattsburgh area. The division of veterans' affairs is hereby directed to provide for the operation and maintenance of such veterans' cemetery pursuant to subdi- vision 12 of section 353 of the executive law. S 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD00300-01-9
