BILL NUMBER:S4165 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the correction law, in relation to information contained in the sex offender registry PURPOSE: Requires the Division of Criminal Justice Services' (DCJS) website that provides sex offender registry information to be searchable by the zip code of a registrant's employment. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section one amends subdivision 1 of section 168-q of the correction law as amended by chapter 532 of the laws of 2011. JUSTIFICATION: While government has taken major actions to inform the public that a convicted registered sex offender is living in their neighborhood, there is currently no way for parents, guardians and those who care for children that a convicted registered sex offender may be working in their community. This legislation corrects a loop hole in the current law that will disclose to the public that not only if a convicted registered sex offender is living in their neighborhood but if they are also working in their community. This measure will protect children and adult victims by enhancing parents, guardians and those who care for children to be aware that a convicted registered sex offender is in their community.
