BILL NUMBER:S6767 REVISED MEMO 03/17/2014

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the environmental conservation law, in
relation to the taking of deer in the county of Suffolk

PURPOSE:

To extend the time period for the taking of deer by long bow in the
County of Suffolk from December 31st until March 31st.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Amends item (h) of paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907 of
the Environmental Conservation law to extend the time period for the
taking of deer by long bow in the County of Suffolk from December 31st
until March 31st

JUSTIFICATION:

The current long bow season for taking deer in Suffolk County, as
regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental
Conservation, is from October through December 31st. With the recent
explosion of Suffolk County's deer population, communities and
municipalities are looking for ways to expand hunting opportunities to
help control the deer population. The excessive deer population on
eastern Long Island poses a threat to public health, public safety,
personal property and the environment. Allowing for the expansion of
the long bow season for deer in Suffolk County for an additional three
months, through the end of March, can further help reduce the size of
the herd.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:

New bill.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:

None.

EFFECTIVE DATE:

This act shall take effect immediately; provided, however, the
amendments to item (h) paragraph a of subdivision 2 of section 11-0907
of the environmental conservation Law made by Section 1 of the this
act shall be subject to the expiration and reversion of such paragraph
pursuant to Section 13 of Chapter 600 of the Laws of 1993, when upon
such date the provisions of section 2 of this act shall take effect.
