BILL NUMBER:S6816 REVISED 3/19/14

TITLE OF BILL: An act directing the metropolitan transportation
authority to rename a certain subway station

PURPOSE OF THE BILL: Briarwood - Van Wyck Boulevard (pronounced
VanWike) is a local station on the IND Queens Boulevard Line of the
New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 84th of 84th
Drive and the Van Wyck Expressway, in Briarwood, Queens, it is served
by the F train at all times and E evenings, late nights and weekends.
This bill would change the name of the Briarwood-Van Wyck subway
station to the Briarwood Station.

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1 of the bill requires the MTA to rename the Briarwood-Van
Wyck subway station on the IND Queens Boulevard line of the New York
City subway the "Briarwood station". The MTA shall ensure that all
signs, maps and any other item issued by the MTA are updated to
accurately reflect the new name of the station.

Section 2 of the bill sets forth an immediate effective date;
provided, however that the MTA shall have up to 180 days to change all
signs, maps and other items as required section one of this act

JUSTIFICATION: The station's original name was Van Wyck Boulevard. It
was changed to Briarwood - Van Wyck Boulevard in confusion with
Jamaica-Van Wyck on the IND Archer Avenue Line. However there has not
been a Van Wyck Blvd., located at this train station for over fifty
years. Due to the confusion it continues to cause Briarwood residents
and individuals visiting Briarwood, this bill would direct the
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to rename the
Briarwood-Van Wyck subway station on the IND Queens Boulevard line to
Briarwood Station.

This legislation is fully supported by the Briarwood Community
Association which represents a community of over 31,000 residents.

PRIOR LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: None

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS FOR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENTS: Minimal.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately; provided,
however that the MTA shall have up to 180 days to change all signs,
maps and other items as required section one of this act.
