TITLE OF BILL: An act authorizing and directing the boards of
trustees of SUNY and CUNY to review and revise the report of the New
York State Governor's Task Force on Campus Fire Safety issued in July
2000
PURPOSE: The purpose of this bill is to direct the board of trustees
of the state university of New York and the board of trustees of the
city university of New York to review the report on campus fire safety
produced in July 2000 and to update sections pertaining to the extent
and adequacy of fire suppression and detection systems within the
state and university systems.
SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: None.
JUSTIFICATION: The New York State Governor's Task Force on Campus
Fire Safety report incorporated short-term steps and long-terms steps
for addressing the fire safety issues examined by the task force. The
task force came to conclusions pertaining to fire suppression and
detection systems on campus residential structures that stated that
all newly-constructed college residential structures should be
equipped with a full sprinkler system and that a phased retrofit
program should be established to install sprinkler systems in all
areas of existing campus residential structures during significant
rehabilitation. This new legislation would allow the boards of

AN ACT authorizing and directing the boards of trustees of SUNY and CUNY
to review and revise the report of the New York State Governor's Task
Force on Campus Fire Safety issued in July 2000
THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The board of trustees of the state university of New York
and the board of trustees of the city university of New York are author-
ized and directed to review and revise the report of the New York State
Governor's Task Force on Campus Fire Safety issued in July 2000 pursuant
to executive order number 103, dated February 14, 2000. Specifically,
the board of trustees of the state university of New York and the board
of trustees of the city university of New York shall update sections
pertaining to the extent and adequacy of fire suppression and detection
systems within the state and city university systems.
S 2. On or before December 1, 2014, the director of the board of trus-
tees of the state university of New York and the board of trustees of
the city university of New York shall deliver a copy of the revised
report and the findings of the review conducted pursuant to section one
of this act and any legislative recommendations they deem to be neces-
sary to the governor, the temporary president of the senate, and the
speaker of the assembly.
S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
