BILL NUMBER:S7306

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to
designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Sergeant
Major Daniel "Dan" Joseph Daly Memorial Highway"

PURPOSE: This legislation would designate a portion of the New York
State Route 107, in the City of Glen Cove, as the "Sergeant Major
Daniel "Dan" Joseph Daly Memorial Highway".

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: The highway law is amended by adding a new
section 344-c to designate a portion of the New York State Route 107,
in the City of Glen Cove, as the "Sergeant Major Daniel "Dan" Joseph
Daly Memorial Highway".

Section 2 directs the commissioner of the department of transportation
to provide for "Sergeant Major Daniel "Dan" Joseph Daly Memorial
Highway" signage and provides that the name designation shall be one
of a ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway will not
be changed.

JUSTIFICATION: Sergeant Major Dan Daly was born in Glen Cove on
November 11, 1873 and is widely recognized as an American hero.
Sergeant Major Dan Daly is one of a very few individuals who have
earned our Nation's highest military honors not once, but twice.
Sergeant Daly was awarded the Medal of Honor along with the Navy
Cross, and the Distinguished Service Cross.

This legislation honors his legacy by designating a portion of the
state highway system as the "Sergeant Major Daniel "Dan" Joseph Daly
Memorial Highway".

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: New bill.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.

AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of
  the state highway system as the "Sergeant Major  Daniel  "Dan"  Joseph
  Daly Memorial Highway"

  THE  PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM-
BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS:

  Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-c to
read as follows:
  S 344-C. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED  AS  THE
"SERGEANT  MAJOR  DANIEL  "DAN"  JOSEPH DALY MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". (A) THAT
PORTION OF NEW YORK STATE ROUTE ONE HUNDRED SEVEN IN THE  CITY  OF  GLEN
COVE  BEGINNING  FROM THE SOUTHERN CITY LINE TO PULASKI STREET, SHALL BE
DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS "SERGEANT MAJOR DANIEL "DAN" JOSEPH DALY MEMORI-
AL HIGHWAY".
  (B) THE COMMISSIONER OF TRANSPORTATION SHALL PROVIDE FOR THE INSTALLA-
TION AND MAINTENANCE OF ADEQUATE SIGNING OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM  AS
DESIGNATED  PURSUANT  TO  THIS  SECTION;  PROVIDED  THAT,  TO  AVOID ANY
CONFUSION AND TO LIMIT ANY POSSIBLE DISRUPTION OF COMMERCE,  THE  DESIG-
NATION  CALLED  FOR  PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION SHALL BE ONE OF CEREMONIAL
NATURE AND THE OFFICIAL NAME OF SUCH HIGHWAY SHALL NOT BE CHANGED  AS  A
RESULT OF THIS ACT.
  S 2. This act shall take effect immediately.

nation called for pursuant to this act shall  be  one  of  a  ceremonial
nature  and  the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a
result of this act.
  S 3. This act shall take effect immediately.
