BILL NUMBER:  S1048

 TITLE OF BILL :  An act to amend the highway law, in relation to
designating a portion of the state highway system in the city of
Saratoga Springs, county of Saratoga as the "Assemblyman Robert
D'Andrea Bridge"

 PURPOSE :

To designate the overpass at exit 14 of Route 87 north as the
"Assemblyman Robert D'Andrea Bridge".

 SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS :

Section one amends the highway law by adding a new section 342-vvv
which designates that portion of the state highway system which is the
exit 14 overpass of Route 87 north as the "Assemblyman Robert D'Andrea
Bridge".

Section two provides that the commissioner of transportation shall
provide for the installation and maintenance of signage and stipulates
the designation shall be of ceremonial nature and the official name of
the overpass shall not be changed.

Section three provides the effective date.

              

 JUSTIFICATION :

Arriving in Saratoga Springs in 1936, Robert D'Andrea and his family
planted deep roots in the city, residing east of Interstate 87 at Exit
14 for decades. After an exceptional 27 years representing Saratoga
and Washington Counties in Albany, former Assemblymen Robert
D'Andrea's legacy concluded with his retirement from the State
Legislature in 2002.

Robert D'Andrea started his public service as the County Supervisor
representing Saratoga Springs for seven years before deciding to
expand his representation of his fellow Saratogians at the State
level. While serving in the Assembly, he was as well known for
attending every barbecue and ribbon cutting in his district, as he was
for passing legislation. While tackling the obstacles that are often
faced by members of the minority, Robert D'Andrea was successful in
keeping his alma mater, Saratoga Central Catholic High School open and
in assisting to draw new businesses to the area.

Robert D'Andrea has been described as the epitome of working with and
being accessible to his constituents. His dedication to them and his
non-partisan approach to doing business with his fellow legislators,
made him a model Supervisor and Assemblyman. Through his hard work,
diligence and skill, D'Andrea rose to the position of Minority Whip in
the Assembly and later achieved status of Assistant Minority Leader
Pro Tem. To commemorate the former Assemblyman's many achievements,
the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that the
New York State Route 9P bridge over Interstate 87 at Exit 14 in
Saratoga County be named in his honor.
