BILL NUMBER: S415 Revised 1/20/17 TITLE OF BILL : An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as "New York State First Responders Tunnel" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL : This bill designates the Queens Midtown Tunnel as the "New York State First Responders Tunnel" in honor of the sacrifices our first responders made on September 11, 2001 and the sacrifices they continue to make on our behalf every day. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS : Section one of this bill designates the Queens Midtown tunnel that crosses under the East River connecting state route four hundred ninety-five, in the borough of Queens, with 34th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue in the borough of Manhattan, as the New York State First Responders Tunnel. Section two provides that the Commissioner of Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintains of adequate signage. Section three provides that this act shall take effect immediately.

CROCI -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as "New York State First Responders Tunnel" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-f to read as follows: § 344-F. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "NEW YORK STATE FIRST RESPONDERS TUNNEL". THE QUEENS MIDTOWN TUNNEL THAT CROSSES UNDER THE EAST RIVER CONNECTING STATE ROUTE FOUR HUNDRED NINE- TY-FIVE, IN THE BOROUGH OF QUEENS, COUNTY OF QUEENS WITH 34TH STREET BETWEEN FIRST AVENUE AND SECOND AVENUE IN THE BOROUGH OF MANHATTAN, COUNTY OF NEW YORK, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "NEW YORK STATE FIRST RESPONDERS TUNNEL". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such tunnel shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3.
