BILL NUMBER: S8861 SPONSOR: LARKIN TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Gold Star Families Memorial Highway" PURPOSE: To recognize the sacrifices made by families who have lost a loved one in service to this nation. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 adds a new Highway Law section 344-h which designates a portion of state route three hundred in the Town of Newburgh, Orange County, as the "Gold Star Families Memorial Highway". Section 2 provides that the commissioner of transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state

LARKIN -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the state highway system as the "Gold Star Families Memorial Highway" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 344-h to read as follows: § 344-H. PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "GOLD STAR FAMILIES MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". ALL THAT PORTION OF THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM COMMENCING AT THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROUTE THREE HUNDRED AND STATE ROUTE FIFTY-TWO IN THE TOWN OF NEWBURGH, COUNTY OF ORANGE, AND CONTINUING IN A GENERALLY SOUTHERLY DIRECTION ON STATE ROUTE THREE HUNDRED, AND TERMINATING AT THE INTERSECTION OF STATE ROUTE THREE HUNDRED AND STATE ROUTE SEVENTEEN-K IN THE TOWN OF NEWBURGH, COUNTY OF ORANGE, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND BE KNOWN AS THE "GOLD STAR FAMILIES MEMORIAL HIGHWAY". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such highway shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3.
