BILL NUMBER: S813 SPONSOR: LIU TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the education law, in relation to dates of commencement of membership of certain positions of school governance in the city of New York PURPOSE OF BILL: This is a chapter amendment that makes changes to provisions of L.2022, c.364. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: This legislation amends the underlying chapter by extending mayoral control an additional two years and provides more time for the expanded PEP to be operational. LIU -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Rules AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to dates of commencement of membership of certain positions of school governance in the city of New York THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Clause (C) of subparagraph 1 of paragraph (a) of subdivi- sion 1 of section 2590-b of the education law, as added by a chapter of the laws of 2022 amending the education law relating to school gover- nance in the city of New York, as proposed in legislative bills numbers S. 9459 and A. 10499, is amended to read as follows: (C) Commencing on [August] JANUARY fifteenth, two thousand [twenty- two] TWENTY-THREE, the board of education shall consist of twenty-three VOTING members: one member to be appointed by each borough president of the city of New York; five members, one from each borough of the city of New York, to be elected by community district education council presi- dents; and thirteen members to be appointed by the mayor of the city of New York. The term of the first member elected by community district education council presidents pursuant to clause (B) of this subparagraph shall be extended and end on [August] JANUARY fourteenth, two thousand [twenty-two] TWENTY-THREE. On or before [July fifteenth] DECEMBER FIRST, two thousand twenty-two, the chancellor shall promulgate regulations establishing a process for community district education council presi- dents to elect members of the board, and processes for removal of such members and for the filling of such positions in the event of a vacancy. All appointed members and members elected by the community education council presidents pursuant to such regulations shall take office on [August] JANUARY fifteenth, two thousand [twenty-two] TWENTY-THREE and shall serve a term that ends on June thirtieth, two thousand twenty- three.
