BILL NUMBER: S8470 SPONSOR: RIVERA TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the public health law, in relation to the supervision of intravenous administration of contrast media by a radiographer PURPOSE: To expand access to radiology services by aligning supervision require- ments for radiologic technologists that administer intravenous contrast media. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends subsection 3 of section 3501 of the public health law (PHL) to permit licensed nurse practitioners (NPs) and licensed physi- cian assistants (PAs) to supervise radiologic technologists administer- ing intravenous contrast media. Section 2 is the effective date.

RIVERA -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Health AN ACT to amend the public health law, in relation to the supervision of intravenous administration of contrast media by a radiographer THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. Subdivision 3 of section 3501 of the public health law, as added by chapter 175 of the laws of 2006, is amended to read as follows: 3. "Radiography" means the use of x-rays or x-ray producing equipment on human beings for diagnostic purposes under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. The practice includes, but is not limited to: measuring and positioning patients; selecting and setting up exposure factors on x-ray equipment, and the making of the x-ray exposure; the performance of quality control tests; [and,] under the direct super- vision of a licensed physician, the intravascular administration of contrast media when such administration is an integral part of the x-ray or imaging procedure; AND, UNDER THE DIRECT SUPERVISION OF A LICENSED PHYSICIAN, LICENSED NURSE PRACTITIONER, OR LICENSED PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, THE INTRAVENOUS ADMINISTRATION OF CONTRAST MEDIA WHEN SUCH ADMINIS- TRATION IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE X-RAY OR IMAGING PROCEDURE. § 2.
