BILL NUMBER: S6829 SPONSOR: FAHY TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating the "John M. Grassia III Memorial Bridge" PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: To honor the life and legacy of New York State Trooper John M. Grassia III, who tragically lost his life on March 8, 2024, while serving as a National Guard pilot. SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1: The highway law is amended by adding a new section naming the Exit 25A ramp over the Thruway (I-90) after John M. Grassia III Section 2: This act shall take effect immediately.

FAHY -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Transportation AN ACT to amend the highway law, in relation to designating the "John M. Grassia III Memorial Bridge" THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The highway law is amended by adding a new section 345-d to read as follows: § 345-D. PORTION OF STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM TO BE DESIGNATED AS THE "JOHN M. GRASSIA III MEMORIAL BRIDGE". THE BRIDGE ON THE PORTION OF INTERSTATE NINETY, EXIT NUMBER TWENTY-FIVE-A IN THE TOWN OF ROTTERDAM, COUNTY OF SCHENECTADY, SHALL BE DESIGNATED AND KNOWN AS THE "JOHN M. GRASSIA III MEMORIAL BRIDGE". § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as designated pursuant to section one of this act. However, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the desig- nation called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD10086-03-5

GRASSIA III. § 2. The commissioner of transportation shall provide for the instal- lation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state highway system as dedicated pursuant to section one of this act, provided that such signing shall state "Bridge Dedicated to CW2 John M Grassia III". Howev- er, to avoid confusion and to limit any possible disruption of commerce, the dedication called for pursuant to section one of this act shall be one of ceremonial nature and the official name of such bridge shall not be changed as a result of this act. § 3.
