TITLE OF BILL:

An act directing the metropolitan transportation authority to rename the
Burnside subway station the Burnside-Bronx Community College subway
station; and providing for the repeal of such provisions upon expiration
thereof

 
PURPOSE:

This bill will rename the Burnside Avenue station to the "Burnside-Bronx
Community College" station. The renaming will recognize the importance
and enduring contributions of Bronx Community College (BCC) to the Bronx
by implementing MTA sign changes.

 
SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:

Section 1 directs the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) to rename the
Burnside subway station the "Burnside-Bronx Community College" subway
station and to ensure all signs, maps, and other items issued by the MTA
              

are updated accordingly to reflect this change.

Section 2 is the effective date.

 
JUSTIFICATION:

Bronx Community College (BCC) was established in 1957 to meet the grow-
ing demand for higher education among residents of the Bronx.
Originally operating as an extension of Hunter College, BCC became an
independent institution within the City University of New York (CUNY)
system in 1973.

In 1973, the college relocated to its current home - the historic
University Heights campus - formerly occupied by New York University
(NYU). This move granted BCC access to one of the most architecturally
and historically significant college campuses in the country, featuring
buildings designed by the renowned architect Stanford White.

A centerpiece of the campus is the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, the
first hall of fame in the United States, founded in 1900. The hall
recognizes prominent figures in American history and underscores BCC's
role in preserving civic and cultural heritage.

BCC has long served a diverse, largely first-generation student popu-
lation, many of whom are from African American, Caribbean, and Latino
backgrounds. Over the decades, the college has built a strong reputation
for academic excellence, workforce development, and community engage-
ment, offering more than 40 associate degree and certificate programs in
fields like nursing, technology, liberal arts, business, and STEM.

Today, Bronx Community College stands as a vital educational and
cultural institution in the Bronx, committed to providing opportunity,
equity, and access to higher education for all New Yorkers.
