BILL NUMBER: S8289 SPONSOR: SANDERS TITLE OF BILL: An act in relation to authorizing the department of public health to designate a level one or level two trauma center in Far Rockaway, county of Queens SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: direct the department of public health to designate a level one or level two trauma center in Far Rockaway, county of Queens if it meets existing requirements, department guidelines, JUSTIFICATION: The Rockaways have a lack of access to a high level trauma center. Currently, there are not the resources to build a new hospital, which the present New York State Law requires for either a Level 1 or Level 2 trauma center. Therefore, this bill exempts the requirement to have a Level 1 or Level 2 trauma center attached to a hospital in Far Rockaway

SANDERS -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Health AN ACT in relation to authorizing the department of public health to designate a level one or level two trauma center in Far Rockaway, county of Queens THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. The department of public health shall designate a level one or level two trauma center in Far Rockaway, Queens county if such center meets all requirements, rules, and regulations promulgated by the department; provided, however, such center shall not be required to include a hospital and shall be exempt from conflicting requirements of the American College of Surgeons. § 2. This act shall take effect immediately. EXPLANATION--Matter in ITALICS (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [ ] is old law to be omitted. LBD13273-01-5
