This month, our nation will pause to honor and recognize American veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. November 11 was originally known as Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of World War I and intended to honor those who served in ‘the war to end all wars.’ It was changed to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans from all eras.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, New York State is home to approximately 838,000 veterans from all branches of the military. We cannot thank these brave servicemembers enough for putting their lives on the line to help keep our country safe, but we can honor and provide support to them through various programs and legislation.
Each year members of the State Senate are invited to induct a veteran from their home district into the Veterans Hall of Fame in recognition of their distinguished military service and contributions to the community. Selecting just one honoree is always a challenge, but the program is one of the highlights of the year for me and the entire Senate.
Over the past several years I have also introduced legislation to dedicate portions of our state highway system in honor of local veterans, some who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Erecting signs along roads and bridges seems like a simple gesture, but they send a powerful message to the community about the sacrifice made by a neighbor and helps ensure their life and service will never be forgotten.
I also sponsor legislation that would provide enhanced school tax exemptions for veterans, similar to the STAR program for New York seniors. Separate bills would provide tax exemptions to active-duty personnel and reservists. I will continue to advocate for passage of these initiatives in Albany.
November is also Veterans and Military Family Appreciation Month in recognition of the unique sacrifices and challenges family members make to support their loved ones in uniform. The NYS Department of Veterans’ Services can help veterans and their families obtain the benefits and services they have earned. Experienced advisors, many of them veterans themselves, can assist in filing claims for a broad spectrum of federal, state, and local programs, including employment, education, and health benefits. Help is also available for service-disabled veterans or those recently discharged from the military. Veterans and their families can reach the department by phone at 1-888-838-7697.
Finally, one thing we can all do to honor our veterans is to exercise one of the most important rights they have fought to defend, our right to vote. Election day is November 4 and whether you are choosing a representative or deciding on a referendum, you play a vital role in our democratic process. So, I encourage you to let your voice be heard, and after you cast your ballot, think of our veterans who have served to protect that right.
