"I'm relieved to learn that Dylan Lopez Contreras has been finally released from ICE detention in Pennsylvania and that he is back with his family. Dylan, who is a high school student at the Ellis Preparatory Academy in the Bronx, was arrested by ICE last May at a Lower Manhattan courthouse while attending a mandatory immigration hearing.
I want to thank the New York Legal Assistance Group for providing Dylan with free legal representation. I want to also recognize the dedicated advocacy of Principal Norma Vega and of so many of my Bronx neighbors who raised their voices in support of Dylan and his family.
"The trump administration is unjustly targeting people like Dylan who came to our country looking for a safe place to live. Thousands of children remain in detention across the country and they should also be reunited with their families and communities. We must continue to resist this cruel administration, stay connected to local groups to protect each other, and pass New York For All to end coordination between local and state law enforcement and ICE."
