(Hempstead, NY) A Hempstead restaurant has won the New York State Empire Business Award in recognition of their contributions and dedication to the community and New York State.

Senator Kevin Thomas presented the owners of El Mofongo restaurant on Fulton Avenue with the Empire Award, which honors businesses that are leaders in their industry, use innovative methods or products, increase jobs and economic growth, and have made a significant impact on their communities.

Hector Henriquez and Martha Caro opened El Mofongo in 2017 to bring authentic, Dominican-style food and baked goods to the Hempstead community. The restaurant is named for a popular dish made from mashed plantains.

“It is an honor to present El Mofongo with the New York State Empire Award,” said Senator Kevin Thomas. “Food is the constant that unites all people and brings us together. El Mofongo has not only brought the flavors of the Dominican Republic to Long Island -- it has brought our community closer together.”
