While lawmakers have rolled back some bail reform, others say it’s not enough

“In my opinion, it was a step in the right direction for public safety. But I think for one thing, a lot of confusion remains with the judges,” said Ontario County Sheriff David Cirencione.

He is among the growing list of law enforcement officials and politicians who say judges need even more discretion.

“I think a lot more needs to be done," Cirencione said.

Cirencione and other law enforcement officials want to see more change, “We’re going overboard for the suspects and the predators and not doing enough for our victims.”

Cirencione is a supporter of state Sen. Pam Helming’s PROTECT Act, which seeks to give judges the legal authority to detain individuals deemed likely to commit violent crimes if released pending trial. Supporters plan to revisit that again next month to work on a plan to give it more traction.
