Senator Jack M. Martins took a special tour of Island Harvest’s new facility, located in Hauppauge. Island Harvest, a food bank for Long Island, dedicates itself to fighting hunger utilizing many programs including a food collection and distribution program, mobile food pantry, Operation: Hope, Summer Food Service Program, Kids Weekend Backpack Program, Nutrition Education Taskforce, Social Services Taskforce and the Job Training Program.

It is estimated that Long Island Harvest serves 283,700 Long Islanders per year. Island Harvest provides food to be distributed by numerous organizations in the Seventh Senate District including those in Elmont, Great Neck, Manhasset, Mineola, New Hyde Park, Port Washington, Roslyn Heights and Westbury.

Senator Martins has recently partnered with villages throughout the Seventh Senate District to hold a food drive to benefit Long Island Cares the Harry Chapin Food Bank. “Island Harvest and Long Island Cares do a phenomenal job helping provide food to those in need. September is Hunger Action Month but Island Harvest and Long Island Cares help others year round,” Senator Martins said.
