Queens, NY, October 25, 2011 – At a time when the unemployment rate in Queens and statewide  is about  7.7%,  with a New York City rate that is slightly higher according to the NYS Department of Labor, NYS Senator Joseph Addabbo (D-Queens) sponsored his 4th Job Fair on Friday, October 21, at The Shops at Atlas Park in Glendale. Some 2,400 job seekers attended the event to explore approximately 1,300 opportunities with 115 potential employers representing the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

Noted Addabbo, “The job climate is tumultuous right now reflecting the unemployment rate in the city and the state that continues to be unacceptably high in our stagnant economy. People have come here in such large numbers because they need to find a job to provide for themselves and their families.”

The senator noted that positive feedback from recruiters at the fair came back to his office from Delta Air Lines, Hillside Honda, GoodTemps, New York Community Bancorp, Prudential, Right at Home, Crystal Clear Connextions, the Center for Employment Opportunities, Steamfitters Training Center and ERA Top Service Realty. Other well-known companies included Coca-Cola, Time Warner Cable, Raymour & Flanigan, Avon, Macy’s, FedEx Ground, National Grid, and several federal, state and city agencies.

Many representatives told Addabbo that they were impressed by the quality of the attendees and on the overall organization of the Job Fair. Equally impressed were many attendees who said they appreciated not only the arrangement of the fair in the space formerly claimed by Stein Mart, but also the large number, variety and quality of the prospective employers that were looking to hire in this economy.

Addabbo and his staff appreciated the cooperation they received from Macerich, the owners of The Shops at Atlas Park. The senator intends to continue the working relationship with Macerich as it progresses toward improving the Glendale shopping mall.

As to why the senator felt the need to organize another job fair, Addabbo stated, “As elected officials, we should do what we can to look for job opportunities for our people.” He said his next--5th Job Fair--was being planned for the fall of 2012.
