Remembering D-Day - June 6

QUEENS, NY - Senator James Sanders Jr. (D-Queens) today encourages Southeast Queens residents to thank the many soldiers who fought and died for our country on D-Day.
"On this historic day let's pause for a moment of silence to recognize those who gave so we may have a lifetime of freedom," said Senator Sanders.
Senator Sanders, a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran, reminds residents that on June 6, 1944, Allied troops invaded the beaches of Normandy, France in the largest amphibious assault in world history. The massive, bloody battle was the turning point of the war in the European theater with 156,000 troops from the United States, Great Britain and Canada.
Allied troops stormed five beaches. American troops landed on Omaha and Utah beach. Approximately 4,000 Allied troops died on D-Day with half of them American.
