"The Juneteenth holiday is a reminder of our past and a celebration of freedom. It recognizes the day when the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy were informed about their emancipation. As we enjoy this festive day, we also recognize that there is still progress to be made. I was proud to be able to make this a holiday here in New York. I am even more proud that Congress has followed New York's lead to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday and that President Biden will sign it into law today."
