In recognition of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Senator James Sanders Jr. is co-sponsoring events around the community to honor surviors and remember those lost. 

"October is a month filled with fun autumn activities and beautiful scenes of foliage," Senator Sanders said. "It also is a month devoted to breast cancer awareness, an annual health campaign, where communities gather and host walks, share knowledge, and celebrate survival.
 
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of death among woman in New York State.  However, early detection can make all the difference in winning the battle against this disease. Women can live healthier and longer lives by early detection measures including scheduling annual physicals and mammograms.

October is also a time to raise awarness about domestic violence. State Senator James Sanders Jr.'s  bill (S.1789), which was signed into law this year, provides more protection for victims of domestic violence.  Under current law, communications between rape victims and counselors are privileged and cannot be disclosed in Court except under certain circumstances.  Senator Sanders' bill would extend those same privileges to victims of domestic violence.  Currently 27 states have passed laws to extend these privileges to victims of domestic violence. The New York State Coalition Against Domestic Violence designated Senator Sanders' bill as a priority bill this legislative session.
