Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (16th District) Calls for Investigation into Prominent New York City Lab after Claims of Racial Discrimination

Flushing, NY- On Sunday, July 11th, The City published a troubling article outlining discrimination allegedly carried out by BioReference Laboratories against its Chinese-American employees. The article describes years of unequal pay, unfair working conditions and disparities in benefits, alleged by six Chinese-American phlebotomists who draw blood from patients.

In response to these allegations, Senator Stavisky sent a letter to Attorney General Letitia James and New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli calling for an investigation into BioReference Laboratories personnel practices.

“BioReference has millions of dollars in contracts with New York State, most notably the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision,” says Senator Stavisky. “These allegations must be thoroughly investigated. On BioReference’s website, they list a detailed code of conduct and business ethics that they clearly ignoring. As such, I believe a review of their contracts and employment practices is in order. We should not be conducting business with a company that fails to treat their employees equally and fairly.”
