Senator Helming recently presented a New York State Commendation Award to Clyde-Savannah School District student, Alexis Taney.
On May 8, 2023, Alexis prevented a seven-year-old student from drowning during community swim hours, where she was lifeguarding. Alexis reported she had noticed a student swallowing a lot of water and the young boy was having trouble keeping his head above water, unable to reach the edge of the pool on his own. Staying composed and remembering her training, Alexis went into action and removed the boy from the water, ensuring a safe rescue.
The New York State Senate Commendation Award honors individuals who exemplify the spirit of community, philanthropy, and leadership, and go beyond what is expected.
Senator Helming said, “Alexis is more than worthy of this special recognition and I was proud to recognize her heroic actions and for getting involved when it mattered most. Her quick actions saved a life that day.”
