Grant will support purchasing of less-lethal devices
State Senator Christopher J. Ryan (SD-50) today announced $55,000 in grant funding to the Village of North Syracuse Police Department for the purchasing of less-lethal devices. By providing officers with effective, less lethal alternatives to firearms, the police department is equipped with tools to prevent tragic outcomes and enhance safety of officers and the public.
“Throughout my public service career, I have remained steadfast in my commitment to giving local law enforcement the tools they need to do their jobs safely and responsibly,” said Senator Ryan. “Investing in less-lethal technology is one of the most effective ways we can prevent unnecessary tragedy, protect the sanctity of life, and strengthen trust between officers and the communities they serve. I’m proud to deliver this funding because it helps ensure that officers and residents alike can be safer in the moments that matter most.”
Eight less-lethal devices will be purchased from Axon Enterprises. These devices, the “Taser 10,” offer increased range and accuracy, significantly improving both effectiveness and officer safety. The Taser 10 also replaces North Syracuse Police Department’s aging conducted energy devices, offering enhanced reliability and performance in rapidly evolving, high-risk situations. In addition, the Taser 10 program includes associated certification and training.
North Syracuse Mayor Gary Butterfield said, “I am thankful to Senator Chris Ryan for providing funds for the purchase of these tools that will be placed into the hands of our dedicated police officers. The upgrade is very much appreciated.”
North Syracuse Chief of Police Chance Fieldson said, “Thank you to Senator Ryan for making this funding possible. With the acquisition of Taser 10, our officers will be equipped with a technologically advanced, less lethal device designed to create more time and space for de-escalation resulting in safer outcomes for officers and the public. Officers routinely face dynamic, rapidly evolving situations, and the Taser 10 is an effective tool enhancing their abilities to serve the community.”
