Grant will support construction of six new pickleball courts
State Senator Christopher J. Ryan (SD-50) today announced $70,000 in grant funding to support the Village of Manlius construction of six new pickleball courts. The award took place as part of a groundbreaking ceremony, marking the start of construction that will provide expanded recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike in the heart of the village at Village Centre Field in the location of the old soccer fields.
“It’s important that every community has access to spaces that bring people together,” said Senator Ryan. “Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country because it’s fun, accessible, and builds connections across generations. These new courts will give residents a place to stay active, meet their neighbors, and strengthen the sense of community that makes Manlius such a great place to live. I’m proud to support this project and the Village’s investment in recreation and quality of life.”
Previously, the Village used their gym for Pickleball, which only allowed for one available court and took time and space away from Senior Exercise and other recreational events. The new state-of-the-art courts are expected to be completed by June 2026.
Village of Manlius Mayor Hank Chapman said, “This is a great example of intermunicipal cooperation in bringing this very important recreational opportunity to the community. We are very excited to see this project come to fruition and are very grateful to Senator Ryan, County Executive McMahon, County Legislator Knapp and our partners at the Manlius Town Board for helping us get to this day.”
Manlius Town Councilor Alissa Italiano said, “Recognizing the increasing demand for outdoor recreation and the widespread popularity of pickleball across all age groups, this project is a wonderful opportunity for our community. We are so excited to be a part of it and look forward to continuing this partnership.”
Manlius Parks and Recreation Director Ryan Campbell said, “We are thrilled to kick off this project of bringing six pickleball courts to the Village of Manlius. As the nation’s fastest growing sport, we are looking forward to providing the opportunity for residents and visitors to enjoy playing and learning the game, while expanding recreational opportunities in the village as a whole with casual play, tournaments, and lessons. I would like to thank all of our state and community leaders, as well as the team members with the Village and Town of Manlius for making this project possible.”
The total cost of the project is $385,000; additional funding for this project is supported by $190,000 as part of a larger $275,000 Main Street Grant from Onondaga County, and $40,000 from the Town of Manlius.
