“If only 89 more New Yorkers would have been counted in the last election, New York State would have retained an additional Congressional seat. Instead, we continued our decline in representation that has occurred every decade since 1950. 

New York City Council Member Julie Menin’s proposed Census office is a key step to ensure an accurate count in 2030. I applaud her for her efforts in getting this across the finish line on city council and I will continue my work to create a similar office for all of New York State.”

Senator Cooney has introduced the New York Counts Act (S6898) which would create The Office of Census Counts to promote outreach for an accurate count in 2030, the Census Counts Commission, which would analyze mistakes made in during past Censuses, and allocate $15 million to support the operations of both offices. 

Senator Cooney has noted that this is one of his top priorities for next year’s legislative session, starting in January.
