New York, NY — State Senator Julia Salazar, Chair of the Committee on Crime Victims, Crime and Correction, released the following statement:
“I’m pleased to see additional officers take accountability for their murder of Robert Lee Brooks at Marcy prison last December. I also hope that all of the involved officers are held accountable as well, either by entering guilty pleas or by being convicted at their trial.
This moment marks another step toward justice for Mr. Brooks, and it highlights the moral obligation to reform our state's violent prison system. Justice and meaningful change are what Mr. Brooks’s family continues to asked for, and it is what all New Yorkers deserve. The Prison Reform Omnibus Bill that we passed in June must be signed into law to significantly increase transparency, accountability, and oversight, and help prevent further deadly violence in our state prisons.”
