Running to Places Empire Award

(Ithaca, NY) - Senator Lea Webb presented Running to Places Theatre Company (R2P) with the New York State Senate Empire Award, recognizing the organization’s longstanding commitment to accessible arts education, youth development, and community engagement throughout Tompkins County and the surrounding region.

Founded in 2007, R2P provides middle- and high-school students with free, inclusive opportunities to participate in theatre productions. The company offers a supportive environment where young people can develop confidence, communication skills, and teamwork through hands-on experiences both onstage and behind the scenes.

R2P maintains a model of full accessibility: participation is completely free, auditions are open to all interested students, and every participant receives a role. This approach ensures that cost and experience level doesn’t limit a teen’s ability to explore the performing arts or benefit from the program’s educational opportunities. Performances are free to members of the public, ensuring that everyone in the community has access to live theatre productions.

Said Joey Steinhagen, Founder & Artistic Director, Running to Places Theatre Company, “Running to Places is truly honored by this recognition from Senator Lea Webb. It shines a light on the heart of our mission: making the joys of live theatre freely accessible to everyone – both onstage and in the audience – equitably and at no cost. Like Senator Webb, we aspire to help our community grow more connected, empowered, and inclusive.”

“Running to Places has had a remarkable impact on the lives of young people across our region,” said Senator Lea Webb. “Their commitment to inclusion, creativity, and mentorship strengthens our community and provides students with opportunities that shape their personal and academic growth. It is a pleasure to honor their dedication with the New York State Senate Empire Award.”

R2P brings together students from a wide range of schools and backgrounds, helping build connections that extend beyond the stage. Alumni frequently credit the program with improving their self-expression, leadership abilities, and sense of belonging. Parents describe the organization as a stable and positive community that supports their children’s development during critical adolescent years.
