
Senator Chan Honors Detective Wenjian Liu | Police Week 2025

Albany, NY — Senator Chan today spoke on the Senate floor in strong support of Senate Resolution J142, which memorializes Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim May 11–17, 2025, as Police Week in the State of New York. The resolution pays tribute to the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers across the state, with special recognition of NYPD Detective Wenjian Liu, who was assassinated in the line of duty in 2014 alongside his partner, Detective Rafael Ramos.
Senator Chan, a 27-year law enforcement veteran, offered heartfelt remarks about his personal connection to Detective Liu’s family, recounting his time spent with Liu’s parents and widow in the days following the tragedy. He emphasized the emotional toll on the Liu family highlighted Detective Liu’s daughter, Angelina, as a powerful reminder of legacy and resilience.
I saw his wife, his widow, His parents losing their only kid and and that one hit home, especially hard for me and I witnessed dozens hours at 911 I lost friends. I lost firemen friends as well other first responders so but detective Wenjian Liu really hit home.
Senate Resolution J142, sponsored by Senator Patrick Gallivan, was adopted unanimously.
