Sen. Gounardes’ ‘Stop Super Speeders’ Proposal Included in Senate One-House Budget
March 10, 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MARCH 10, 2026
New York State Senator Andrew Gounardes issued the following statement in response to the inclusion of his ‘Stop Super Speeders’ Act in the State Senate’s One-House budget resolution:
“If you've spent any time on a New York street, you know how terrifying—and infuriating—it is when someone recklessly speeds. My Stop Super Speeders bill does a simple, life-saving thing: slow those drivers down.
“We've seen this proven approach work in other places and in New York City's own municipal fleet. I wrote the law to ensure real accountability for the most dangerous drivers. It applies to a small percentage of all vehicles on our streets, but it will have an outsize impact on safety. We owe nothing less to all those who have lost a loved one to reckless driving."
Background:
The Stop Super Speeders Act (S.4045C) requires the owner of a vehicle that accumulates 16+ speed camera violations to install a speed limiter device in any motor vehicle owned or operated by them for a period of at least twelve months. Localities outside New York City may require a speed limiter device at a threshold that captures the top 1% of drivers who receive speed camera violations.
