State Senator Christopher J. Ryan (SD-50) on Monday, honored Officer John Cottrell of the Cicero Police Department with a Liberty Medal–the highest honor which can be bestowed by a State Senator.
In September of 2025, while off-duty and serving as the head coach of the Geddes Knights Pop Warner Football Team, Officer Cottrell witnessed a physical altercation between a group of four males. After seeing one individual draw a knife and another draw a handgun, Officer Cottrell approached the group, identified himself as a police officer, and proceeded to pursue the group on foot as they fled.
Officer Cottrell was able to provide critical details to the Geddes Police Department for their further investigation and was credited with preventing a larger tragedy from occurring.
“Officer John Cottrell’s actions reflect the very best of what it means to serve and protect,” said Senator Ryan. “Even while off-duty, he did not hesitate to step in, putting the safety of others above his own. His courage, quick thinking, and commitment to his community helped prevent what could have been a far more serious and dangerous situation. It is an honor to recognize Officer Cottrell with the Liberty Medal.”
Senator Ryan’s Deputy Chief of Staff Brooke Schneider presented Officer Cottrell with the Liberty Medal during the annual awards banquet for the Central New York Association of Chiefs of Police.
“Officer John Cottrell’s courage, professionalism, and calm demeanor during this incident were truly exemplary,” said John Fall, Geddes Police Chief. “Despite the inherent risks involved in intervening in an off-duty capacity, his actions undoubtedly prevented a potentially larger tragedy from unfolding. On behalf of the Town of Geddes Police Department, and our community, I extend my deepest gratitude to Officer Cottrell for his outstanding performance and unwavering commitment to public safety.”
“Officer Cottrell has been consistently recognized for going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Steve Rotunno, Cicero Police Chief. “His professionalism, intelligence, and depth of experience make him an exceptional police officer. He approaches every situation with sound judgment and a strong sense of responsibility, making him someone both his fellow officers and members of the community can rely on in any situation. Officer Cottrell’s willingness to step forward in critical moments truly exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement.”
