Senator Ryan to Host 529 College Savings Workshop
June 17, 2026
Workshop will help parents navigate early college savings program
State Senator Christopher J. Ryan (SD-50) announced a 529 College Savings educational event at the Clay Town Hall, 4401 NY-3, on Thursday, June 25 at 6:00 p.m. The event aims to teach parents about New York State’s 529 College Savings Program, which is a simple and flexible way to save for education expenses while taking advantage of potential tax benefits.
As the cost for higher education continues to grow, parents who start saving early give their money more time to grow and have more time to plan for their children’s future. The 529 College Savings Program provides benefits such as tax free withdrawals and growth, state income tax deductions, and federal gift tax incentives. The Program also allows parents to keep control of the account after their child turns 18, change the name associated with the account if the child chooses not to pursue higher education, transfer up to $35,000 to a Roth IRA if the child receives a scholarship, and have a better chance of qualifying for Financial Aid than other saving methods.
“As a father of four, I understand the challenges families face when planning and saving for their children's higher education,” said Senator Ryan. “New York State’s 529 College Savings Program provides parents and guardians with an easy, effective way to prepare for future educational expenses while taking advantage of valuable tax benefits. I thank the Town of Clay and the 529 College Savings Program for partnering with my office to make these important resources accessible to families across Central New York.”
Representatives from New York’s 529 College Savings Program will be on hand and provide a presentation. Representatives from Senator Ryan’s office and State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office will also be on hand to provide other State assistance to attendees.
