Senator James Sanders Jr. Hosts Successful Emergency ICE Forum
Queens, NY, in response to growing national concerns surrounding federal immigration enforcement and the protection of constitutional rights, New York State Senator James Sanders Jr. convened an urgent Know Your Rights community forum this past Saturday, drawing more than 80 residents from Rochdale Village and across Southeast Queens communities.
The event was organized in partnership with community leaders and advocacy organizations to ensure residents understand their legal rights and protections, regardless of immigration status, in light of recent tragic incidents across the country involving federal enforcement actions.
Recent events, including fatal encounters between federal immigration agents and U.S. citizens in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and other jurisdictions, have raised profound questions about civil liberties, due process, and the appropriate use of force. These developments underscore the reality that immigration enforcement and civil rights issues now impact communities well beyond traditionally targeted populations.
“This is no longer an abstract issue or one that only affects migrants,” said Senator James Sanders Jr. “What we are witnessing nationally shows us that civil liberties must be protected for everyone. Our community deserves to know their rights, how to safely interact with law enforcement, and what legal protections exist under federal and state law.”
The forum featured a panel of legal and advocacy experts who provided critical information and resources to attendees:
Panelists included:
• Tseyang Tenzin, NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs
• Michael Scala, Queens Defenders
• Destiny Cruz, Working Families Party
The event was also supported by elected officials and community institutions committed to public education and civic protection:
Supporters and Partners included:
• NYS Assembly Member Khaleel Anderson
• NYS Assembly Member Clyde Vanel
• NYC Council Member Ty Hankerson
• Rochdale Village
• 149th Street South Ozone Park Civic Association
• UNCA
• NYPD
• Projects II Projects
• Economic Leadership Council
• Queens Community Justice Center
• Queens Community Board 12
Attendees received guidance on their constitutional rights, how to respond during law enforcement encounters, and access to legal and social service resources. The forum emphasized that fear and misinformation must not replace knowledge and preparedness.
“At a time when families across the nation are experiencing uncertainty and anxiety, this event demonstrated what is possible when government and community partners work together to provide clarity, support, and protection,” Senator Sanders added.
Senator Sanders’ office reaffirmed its commitment to hosting future Know Your Rights forums and continuing to advocate for policies that uphold due process, transparency, and the civil liberties of all New Yorkers.
