Griffo and Angelino: Bill supporting efforts to enhance senior care in New Berlin, Chenango County signed into law
October 20, 2026
New York State Sen. Joseph Griffo and Assemblyman Joseph Angelino announced today that legislation they introduced that would help to enhance senior care in Chenango County has been signed into law by the governor.
The bill (S.9943-A/A.11056.A) allows the Village of New Berlin to provide a plot of existing parkland to Good Shepherd Communities in support of the organization’s construction of a new Chase Memorial Nursing Home & Rehabilitation facility.
Good Shepherd Communities, which operates the nursing home, plans to build a 60-unit skilled-nursing facility approximately one-quarter mile away from its existing site in the community. This new, state-of-the-art space will provide short-term rehabilitation and skilled long-term care for individuals in need.
State legislation facilitating the transfer of this undeveloped, unutilized land was needed due to the parcel's century-old designation for park and athletic purposes.
“I am pleased that the governor has signed this legislation into law, and I appreciate Assemblyman Angelino’s partnership in this effort,” Sen. Griffo said. “Chase Memorial Nursing & Rehabilitation Center has been an important part of the New Berlin community and surrounding area for many years. However, it has been determined that a new facility is necessary to best meet the needs of residents and staff. This bill helps move this critical replacement project forward and supports the work being undertaken by Good Shepherd Communities and the Village of New Berlin to improve health and medical care in Chenango County.”
“I am grateful to see this important piece of legislation signed into law,” Assemblyman Angelino said. “Supporting and taking care of our seniors should be a priority for everyone in government. I am excited to see the great work that will be accomplished by Chase Memorial Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Good Shepherd Communities and the Village of New Berlin. I know this will be a huge win for Chenango County.”
“This legislation is a win-win, responding to our Village's need for advanced senior care without sacrificing recreational opportunities,” Village of New Berlin Mayor Peter Lennon said. “Decades ago, Chase Memorial was America's birthplace of the ‘Eden’ concept, introducing a more home-like senior environment, with pets and gardens. I'm confident the new Chase will continue to be a leader in senior living and rehab. Sen. Griffo and Assemblyman Angelino listened and were the driving forces behind this creative, compassionate and conservation-conscious path forward.”
