New York, NY — State Senator Julia Salazar released the following statement:
“This past Saturday, ICE agents assaulted, tased and kidnapped Chidozie Wilson Okeke as he requested a lawyer, giving him such serious injuries that he had to receive medical care at Wyckoff Hospital. ICE agents then brutalized New Yorkers who came out to defend our community. We know that ICE will continue their violent and fascistic attacks against our immigrant neighbors and against those who resist them, unless New York takes substantial action. This underscores the urgency of passing legislation to protect New Yorkers from lawless ICE agents, including New York for All and Dignity Not Detention, which would at a minimum get our state out of the shameful business of collaborating with ICE.”
“Additionally, video footage appears to show that some of the NYPD officers who were present at Wyckoff Hospital assisted the ICE agents, and used excessive force toward New Yorkers exercising their first amendment rights. As Trump’s federal immigration enforcement continues to escalate its attacks on our communities, the NYPD must prioritize the safety of civilian New Yorkers in the face of such violence.”
