SENATOR WALCZYK CALLS OUT HOCHUL FOR TREATING NYC LIKE HER FAVORITE CHILD WHILE NEGLECTING UPSTATE
February 20, 2026
Senator Mark Walczyk has condemned Governor Kathy Hochul's reckless decision to allocate $1.5 billion in taxpayer money to New York City, while the state budget is projected to reach a staggering $263 billion. This bailout, which serves to prop up a city struggling with its own fiscal management, reflects a profound disconnect from the challenges facing families across New York State.
“Governor Hochul's plan to send $1.5 billion to New York City is a clear indication that her priorities are completely out of touch with reality,” Walczyk asserted. “How can she justify bailing out a city that has repeatedly proven it cannot manage its own budget while turning a blind eye to the rest of New York State? This is not fiscal responsibility; it's a blatant disregard for the hardworking families who are struggling to pay their bills and keep the lights on.”
The backdrop of this bailout is alarming. New York City’s budget has ballooned to a record $127 billion, which includes a staggering $10 billion increase over last year and an additional $1.2 billion earmarked for services to undocumented migrants. Instead of reining in this excess, Hochul is opting to increase the state budget by nearly $3 billion, further deepening the financial hole for taxpayers throughout New York.
“Every day New Yorkers are facing skyrocketing energy bills and high living costs—yet instead of addressing these pressing issues, the governor is pouring more taxpayer money into an irresponsible city budget,” Walczyk continued. “New York City does not have a revenue problem; it has a spending problem, and this bailout only incentivizes further irresponsibility.”
In a recent letter, Walczyk and the Senate Republican Conference urged Hochul to reconsider her approach, emphasizing that taxpayers across the state should not bear the burden of New York City’s financial missteps. “It's simply unacceptable for the governor to prioritize the interests of a city that habitually overspends, while hardworking families across New York are left to fend for themselves,” he stated. “We need fiscal restraint, not more wasteful spending.”
Senator Walczyk remains committed to advocating for the needs of his constituents and ensuring that state resources are used wisely. He calls on his fellow lawmakers to reject policies that further exhaust taxpayer funds while failing to provide relief for those who truly need it.
