LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Ridgewood Library upon the occasion
of celebrating its 90th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Ridgewood Library upon the occasion of celebrating its 90th Anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, The Ridgewood Library, as one location of the Queens Public
Library System, is an integral part of the community and has served the
residents of this neighborhood for nine decades, offering opportunities
for education, personal growth, and recreation for people of all ages;
and
WHEREAS, As a branch of one of the largest and most active library
systems in the country, the Ridgewood Library is part of an extraor-
dinary network of libraries which serves millions of people each year;
and
WHEREAS, The Ridgewood Library continues to demonstrate an extraor-
dinary commitment to its many visitors, providing them with the greatest
of opportunities to succeed in school, in college, in careers, and in
their daily lives; and
WHEREAS, The Ridgewood Library offers free computer access to communi-
ty members, helping to bridge the digital divide for people who cannot
afford one or otherwise do not have home computers; and
WHEREAS, Among many other services, the Ridgewood Library offers a
variety of activities for children, adult literacy courses, computer
courses, student social hours, health seminars, exercise classes, story
hours in different languages, programs for older adults, and services
for immigrants; and
WHEREAS, The Ridgewood Library is well-known as a place where local
residents can come to read, search for employment, gain new skills, make
new friends, and otherwise live more fulfilling lives; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Ridgewood Library upon the occasion of celebrating its 90th
Anniversary, and to acknowledge its many vital contributions to the
entire community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Ridgewood Library.

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Woodhaven Library upon the occasion
of celebrating its 90th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Woodhaven Library upon the occasion of celebrating its 90th Anniversary;
and
WHEREAS, The Woodhaven Branch of the Queens Public Library System,
located at 85-41 Forest Parkway, is an integral part of the community
and has served the residents of this neighborhood for nine decades,
offering opportunities for education, personal growth, and recreation
for people of all ages; and
WHEREAS, The Woodhaven Library is part of an extraordinary network of
libraries which serves millions of people each year, and makes up one of
the largest and most active library systems in the country; and
WHEREAS, The Woodhaven Library, as one of several branches offering
pre-kindergarten classes, continues to demonstrate an extraordinary
commitment to its many visitors, providing them with the greatest of
opportunities to succeed in school, in college, in careers, and in their
daily lives; and
WHEREAS, The Woodhaven Library offers free computer access to communi-

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the
Poppenhusen Institute on June 2, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose exem-
plary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate the pursuit of
excellence in education and service to the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 150th Anniversary of the Poppenhusen Institute to be cele-
brated with a Dinner and a 21st Century Elevator Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
on Saturday, June 2, 2018, in the Grand Victorian Room of the Poppenhu-
sen Institute in College Point, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Poppenhusen Institute was built in 1868, with funds
donated by Conrad Poppenhusen, the benefactor of College Point; the
original charter specified that it be open to all, irrespective of race,
creed or religion, giving people the opportunity to improve their lives
either by preparing them for better jobs or improving their leisure
time; and
WHEREAS, The institute housed the Justice of the Peace, the first home
of the College Point Savings Bank, German Singing Societies, the first
library in the area, a court room, the Sheriff's Office (2 jail cells
remain today), as well as the first free kindergarten in the United
States which began on July 1, 1870; over the years many successful local
business owners attended various adult education programs; and
WHEREAS, Due to its history and impressive architecture, the Poppenhu-
sen Institute was designated a New York City Landmark in 1970, and
subsequently, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in
1973; and
WHEREAS, In 1980, the Poppenhusen Institute was threatened with sale
and demolition; however, through the steadfast efforts of a community
group and a Supreme Court case, this action was fortunately prevented;
and
WHEREAS, The Poppenhusen Institute currently serves College Point as a
community cultural center housing a variety of programs including karate
for children and adults, group guitar and piano lessons, lectures and
slide presentations, special winter and spring break workshops for kids,
stress workshops, summer concerts at the Institute and McNeil Park,
children's performances and workshops, historic exhibits, school and
public tours, hall and garden rentals, and AA meetings, as well as a
resident theatre company, E. Phoenix Idealis; and
WHEREAS, Today, the Poppenhusen Institute remains true to its mission
of offering individuals of the metropolitan area life enhancing
cultural, recreational and educational programs, either free or at a
nominal fee; it strives to provide a warm, welcoming and encouraging
environment to all who enter through "The Doorway of Opportunity"; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Poppenhusen Institute is in direct corre-
lation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is, and always has
been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusi-
asm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on
behalf of the institution and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Poppenhusen Institute on June
2, 2018; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Judith Sustack upon the occasion of her
retirement after 32 years of dedicated service to the Middletown School
District

WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and character
whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this great
State; and
WHEREAS, The result of many individual efforts, the excellence and the
success of the Middletown School District is due in large part to the
efforts of Judith Sustack; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Judith Sustack
upon the occasion of her retirement after 32 years of dedicated service
to the Middletown School District, to be celebrated with a Surprise
Retirement Party on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at The Eagle's Nest, Bloom-
ingburg, New York; and
WHEREAS, A true inspiration and mentor, Judith Sustack served the
Middletown School District for more than three decades; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her illustrious tenure with the District, Judith
Sustack has always gone above and beyond her duties; affectionately
known by many as "Momma Jude," she has truly devoted most of her life to
helping others; and
WHEREAS, A knowledgeable and highly skilled woman, Judith Sustack has
improved the quality of education at the Middletown School District by
leading and supporting staff with enthusiasm, cultivating a positive and
stimulating school environment, and creating a greater sense of communi-
ty; and
WHEREAS, Judith Sustack has continually demonstrated an impressive
dedication, an unparalleled devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm for
the quality of the educational programs and opportunities offered at the
Middletown School District for the benefit of its faculty and students,
as well as for the entire community; and
WHEREAS, A caring, competent and committed leader, Judith Sustack's
character and integrity are the hallmarks of her life and work as an
administrator, a community volunteer and as a person; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, Joe, as well as
three children, Joseph, Jason and Jessica, and five grandchildren, Ava,
Michael, Morgan, Lila and Peyton, who have all shown her love and
support and rejoice in her many achievements; and
WHEREAS, In completing her service as Office Manager, Judith Sustack
leaves behind more than mere bricks and mortar; she leaves behind a
legacy to the students of Middletown School District and to the resi-
dents of the Middletown community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Judith Sustack upon the occasion of her retirement, and to wish
her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating James Gersbeck upon the occasion
of receiving the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout, the most prestigious
of Scouting honors, on July 1, 2018

WHEREAS, James Gersbeck, through his diligence and rigorous efforts, has
achieved Scouting's highest and most prestigious rank, Eagle Scout; the
Eagle Court of Honor ceremony will be held on Sunday, July 1, 2018, at
Howells Fire House, Howells, New York; and
WHEREAS, James Gersbeck is a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop 1,
Otisville, New York; and
WHEREAS, America has achieved her greatest heights of glory through
the dedication, determination and tireless efforts of the outstanding
citizens of this Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is only with the continued diligence and devotion of our
youth, tomorrow's leaders, that America will maintain her glory; and
WHEREAS, The Boy Scouts of America and its members are dedicated to
the development of character and leadership in the youth of this Nation;
and
WHEREAS, The highest achievement of leadership in Scouting, earned by
only five percent of all Boy Scouts, is the distinguished rank of Eagle
Scout; and
WHEREAS, This outstanding young man has been involved in Scouting for
many years, has lived up to Scouting's ideals and has attained all of
the necessary achievements, including completion of a community service
project, which was successfully planned, developed and executed; and
WHEREAS, For his project, James Gersbeck led a team of volunteers in
the replacement of approximately 20 signs around the perimeter of the
Howells Fire District in Wallkill, Mount Hope and Mamakating; and
WHEREAS, His dedication to the safety and well-being of the citizens
of Otisville, New York, is represented through his project and demon-
strates his devotion to both community and commitment to others; and
WHEREAS, James Gersbeck's perseverance in rising through the ranks to
Eagle Scout is a strong indication of his ability to master difficult
tasks; his accomplishment will enable him to emerge as a leader, fully
equipped to meet the challenges of today's complex society; and
WHEREAS, This new Eagle Scout is a credit to his family, his school,
his community, his State and his Nation, and no doubt his future will be
filled with accomplishments of equal importance; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations, in
recognition of the significance of this meritorious achievement, to

citizens of this Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is only with the continued diligence and devotion of our
youth, tomorrow's leaders, that America will maintain her glory; and

his community, his State and his Nation, and no doubt his future will be

Eagle Scout is a strong indication of his ability to master difficult
tasks; his accomplishment will enable him to emerge as a leader, fully
equipped to meet the challenges of today's complex society; and
WHEREAS, This new Eagle Scout is a credit to his family, his school,
his community, his State and his Nation, and no doubt his future will be
filled with accomplishments of equal importance; now, therefore, be it

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the Ellen-
ville Public Library & Museum on June 9, 2018

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across the great State
of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its citi-
zenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 125th Anniversary of the Ellenville Public Library & Museum,
to be celebrated with a Birthday Party on Saturday, June 9, 2018; and
WHEREAS, The Ellenville Public Library & Museum was chartered in 1893
as a school district library; beginning with a collection of 1,000
books, the library has grown in size and stature, serving today as the
informational and cultural center of the community; and
WHEREAS, In 1966, the Library's charter and legal name were formally
changed to include "and Museum", reflecting the organization's commit-
ment to collecting, preserving and sharing the community's local histo-
ry; and
WHEREAS, Today, with nearly 50,000 print books, the Ellenville Public
Library & Museum is proud to serve more than 20,000 patrons in the
Ellenville School District as well as in the Towns of Wawarsing and
Rochester; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Ellenville Public Library
& Museum provides resources, services and public programming of the
highest possible quality to meet the ongoing informational, educational,
cultural and recreational needs of our broadly diverse community; and
WHEREAS, The Ellenville Public Library & Museum is committed to
preserving the past while pursuing technological innovations with which
to best serve the current and future needs of our patrons and visitors;
and
WHEREAS, The success of the Ellenville Public Library & Museum is in
direct correlation to the efforts of Library Director Pam Stocking and
its dedicated staff, whose involvement is, and always has been, charac-
terized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an
uncompromising standard of excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the
library and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, Ellenville
Public Library & Museum may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as
it looks forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Ellenville Public Library &
Museum on June 9, 2018; and be it further

LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik upon
the occasion of celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes great pleasure in paying tribute to
those flourishing marriages that have stood the test of time to serve as
a paradigm for present and future generations; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to congratulate Mr.
and Mrs. Richard Janik upon the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniver-
sary; the couple celebrated their Golden Anniversary with a party held
in their honor at their lake house with many family members; they also
renewed their vows at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church in Farnham,
New York; and
WHEREAS, Richard Janik and the former Linda Stack were united in
marriage on May 25, 1968, at St. Bonaventure Roman Catholic Church in
West Seneca, New York; and
WHEREAS, They are the proud parents of three children, and the loving
grandparents of five grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Richard Janik is retired from ExxonMobil Development Company
in Houston, Texas, where he worked as an Upstream Project Quality Manag-
er; Linda Janik is a retired registered nurse with operating room
specialty; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik are and always have been a tower
of strength, support, understanding and limitless love for their family;
and
WHEREAS, Their devotion, caring, sensitivity and responsiveness to
their family, friends and all who know them are their hallmark and
tradition; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik have lived and continue to live
their lives with great dignity and genuine grace, always demonstrating a
deep and continuing concern for human values and ideals, and in so
doing, they have inspired others to do the same; and
WHEREAS, This meaningful occasion is the result of the love, hard work
and spirit this couple has invested in their marriage; and
WHEREAS, These same values they have passed to their loved ones,
producing a family that is close-knit and supportive of its individual
members, public-minded in its relations to the community and committed
to the ideals of citizenship upon which this Nation was founded; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik have touched the lives of their
family and many friends through the shining example of their marriage,
which is a testament to the devotion and admiration which they possess
for one another; and
WHEREAS, The longevity of this enduring marriage truly marks a mile-
stone in life's journey, an event of personal triumph and joy; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when an
occasion of such importance is brought to our attention, the same should
be memorialized by us for the edification and emulation of others; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik upon the occasion of celebrating
their 50th Wedding Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Janik.
