What is deed theft?
Deed theft occurs when a thief takes the title to a home without the homeowner’s knowledge or approval.
Deed theft can happen through Forgery (when a thief fakes a homeowner’s signature on a deed and files it with the county clerk) or fraud (when homeowner signs their deed over to a thief without realizing what they are signing.)

What can we do about it?
Deed theft is illegal, but it still happens. We're working to pass legislation that will help defend New Yorkers from deed theft.
